What is Menopause?

Menopause is when women transition to no longer having normal menstrual periods. The periods are usually irregular for 1 to 3 years before ending permanently. During this process, the ovaries stop producing eggs and the body's estrogen and progesterone levels decrease. The change in hormones can cause symptoms like hot flashes, disrupted sleep or lowered sex drive. Each woman will experience these symptoms differently depending on the individual.

Menopause usually occurs when women are between 45 and 55 years old. When women have finished menopause and reach postmenopause, they will no longer be able to get pregnant, but can continue to enjoy a healthy, sexual and active life.

Symptoms of Menopause

Symptoms of menopause can include hot flashes, rapid heartbeat, insomnia, night sweats, mood swings, anxiety, depression, vaginal dryness, decreased desire for sex, vaginal infections. It's also common for postmenopause women to have bone loss, which can lead to osteoporosis. Medications can help prevent or slow bone loss. Also, you can be proactive about your health by keeping watch for changes in cholesterol levels, and preventing heart disease by exercising, eating a healthy diet, and taking cholesterol medications. If you experience any bleeding after menopause, seek medical advice to make sure it is a symptom of menopause and not a different condition.

Symptom Prevention

While menopause is a natural stage in female development, you can prevent or lower your chances of experiencing the symptoms described above. Once you have reached perimenopause, regular appointments with your doctor will be helpful to plan for your proactive health during and after menopause. Preventative habits can also lower your chances of heart disease and osteoporosis. Here are some steps you can take:

  • One important step you can take is to not smoke. Smoking cigarettes can lead to early menopause.
  • Take calcium and vitamin D supplements along with your diet.
  • Focus on eating a low-fat diet.
  • Manage your cholesterol and blood pressure to prevent cardiovascular disease.
  • Incorporate regular exercise into your routine to maintain healthy bones. Focus on bone strengthening movements or exercises that resist gravity.
  • If you notice signs of premature bone loss, ask your doctor about preventative medications.

Menopause Treatment

Menopause itself is perfectly normal and does not need to be medically treated. The products related to menopause are for the purpose of relieving and preventing symptoms. Treatment options include:

  • Hormone therapy. Treatment involving the estrogen hormone Is the best way to treat hot flashes. Doctors will usually prescribe the lowest dose of estrogen needed. Estrogen helps minimize bone loss, and can help your heart'ss health
  • Vaginal estrogen comes as a topical cream that treats vaginal dryness, discomfort during intercourse, and possibly urinary issues.
  • Mild antidepressants. Antidepressants that are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can be helpful with treating hot flashes. This option is especially relevant for women who are unable to take estrogen treatments, or who need antidepressants for their mood.
  • Osteoporosis medication. Postmenopausal women can benefit from osteoporosis medications that prevent bone loss and chance of fractures.
