Habitrol is a smoking cessation aid. This transdermal system utilizes a patch applied directly to the skin to deliver calibrated doses of nicotine to the user. Additional Information about Habitrol

A single path is applied to the clean skin of the upper arm at the start of each morning. The wearer can shower, exercise, and maintain normal daily activities while wearing it.

Side Effects

The side effects of Habitrol are related to the nicotine ingredient and dependent on the level of toxicity. These include disturbances of the central nervous system, such as headaches, dizziness, sleepiness, agitation, weakness, sleeplessness, and aberrant dreams.

Cardiovascular signs such as chest pain, hypertension, an increased pulse rate, or irregular heartbeat should be reported to a physician. Other disturbances may involve gastrointestinal irritation resulting in nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, abdominal pain, dry mouth, irregular menstruation, and a burning sensation at the patch application site.

Precautions

A user should exercise extreme care to avoid nicotine toxicity by smoking while wearing Habitrol 14. Since there is limited safety information for young people, no one under the age of 18 should use Habitrol patches , unless instructed to do so by a medical professional.

Other conditions that may preclude the use of Habitrol are:

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
  • Hypothyroidism
  • People with allergies to adhesives
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Any type of heart disease, hypertension, or vascular disease

Warnings

The active ingredient in Habitrol can interact with other medications. Specific drugs that are contraindicated include acetaminophen, adrenergic antagonists, clozapine, furosemide or lasix, imipramine, oxazepam, pentazocine, propranolol, and theophylline. In addition, nicotine may alter the metabolism of other therapeutic agents.

  • Insulin- dosages may need to be adjusted
  • Bupropion - may increase risk for hypertension
  • Isoproterenol and Phenylephrine - doseages may need to be adjusted
  • Propoxyphene - may interfere with the absorption of the nicotine and decrease the effectiveness of treatment.

It is important not to smoke while using Habitrol patches. Signs of nicotine poisoning are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and visual disturbances.
