Diovan and/or Equivalent Valsartan Prescription Information
Diovan, which contains the active ingredient valsartan, is classified as an antihypertensive drug. By blocking angiotensin 2 receptors, Diovan dilates blood vessels and reduces high blood pressure. Two studies have shown that Diovan also reduces the number of incidents and the progression of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Diovan can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensive medications based upon results achieved with the individual patient. Diovan is used as a treatment for Heart Failure, Hypertension, and High Blood Pressure. Diovan is also used to reduce fatality risk after suffering a heart attack. In addition to lowering high blood pressure, the goal of this medication is to prevent the occurrence of both Stroke and Heart Attack. This drug is in a class of medications called Angiotensin Receptor Blockers, which work by relaxing blood vessels and preventing them from narrowing. As a result of keeping blood vessels open, the heart is able to pump blood more easily and blood pressure is reduced. Doctors prescribe Diovan for individuals with high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. It can also be used to increase survival rates amongst individuals who have suffered a heart attack. Like other Angiotensin II receptor blockers, Diovan inhibits the production of angiotensin II. This enzyme results in the constriction of blood vessels, which causes blood pressure to increase. By blocking this enzyme, Diovan helps the blood vessels become dilated, which will improve blood flow throughout the body. Since the functions of the heart are also improved, resulting in more efficient pumping of blood, Diovan can also treat individuals with congestive heart failure.

Indication/Usage:
Diovan is approved for various indications related to cardiac disorders, including high blood pressure/hypertension, congestive heart failure (NYHA class II-IV), and post-myocardial infarction. Along with hypertension, Diovan also reduces the risk of primary strokes and hospitalization and mortality related to heart failure.
Dose, Administration and Dosage forms:
The actual dose of Diovan is dependent on the indication for which it is used.
-
High blood pressure: The usual dose is 80-160 mg once per day for high blood pressure in adult patients. This dose should not exceed the maximum dose of 320 mg daily.
-
Congestive heart failure: The usual dose is 40 mg twice per day for congestive heart failure. This dose should not exceed the maximum dose of 80-160 mg twice per day.
-
Heart attack: The starting post-heart attack dose is 20 mg twice per day. This dose should not exceed the maximum dose of 160 mg twice per day.
Diovan is available in orally-administered tablet dosage form, which comes in 40 mg, 80 mg, 160 mg, and 320 mg strengths. Diovan may be administered with or without meals and should be stored at temperatures between 15-30C (59 - 86F).
Mechanism of Action: Diovan contains the active ingredient, valsartan, which is an Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme-Inhibitor (ACE-inhibitor). It acts by blocking the conversion of angiotensin 1 (AT-1) to angiotensin 2 (AT-2). The reduced levels of AT-2 result in relaxation of vascular smooth muscle leading to vasodilatation, which ultimately results in the reduction of blood pressure in hypertensive patients. Diovan also reduces aldosterone and vasopressin secretion and thus helps in reducing blood pressure.
